Art Monthly Update - May 2010

In celebration of Cinco de Mayo, the students have focused on the arts and crafts of Mexico.  The sun is an important theme often reflected in paintings and sculptures of Mexico.  Inspired by the Nahua Indians, Grades K-3 created Metepec Suns using color paper.  Each student decorated their sun with bright colors and floral patterns.

Grades 4-8 focused on the metal work of Mexico, especially the Milagros or religious “miracle” charms.  The Milagros can be offered in thanksgiving for a prayer answered or as a prayer request from a saint.  After looking at samples of metal work, the students used aluminum foil to create their own Milagros.  They drew onto the foil a symbol of their request or intention.  Then with a string, they attached a piece of paper with their request on it.

Finally, the students added color with permanent markers.  These metal charms look great!

God Bless,

Miss Balinas
