December 1-5, 2008

I hope everyone had a very enjoyable and peaceful Thanksgiving. I pray you were able to share some special time as a family. We have an exciting and yet busy time of year ahead.

We started preparing for Advent just before Thanksgiving. The children make a placemat for the family table to use during the Advent season.I hope some nights it can be used as the family prayer. (www.faithfirst.com is a great website for Advent) Attached is some information about the Jesse tree, which we will be learning about in class, plus some extra information. Persons of faith who have understanding of Catholic faith and doctrines.

Scholastic book orders were sent home last week. They are due Wednesday,

December 3, 2008. This will be the last order before Christmas. If you would like to order as Christmas presents just let me know and I will only give them to YOU! Thank you.

There will be NO CENTERS Tuesday because we will be making cookies. (8-9:15 if you’d like to help)

The children received 2 copies of the Prayer of Sorrow (also called Act of Contrition).

Please help your child learn this prayer before the Sacrament of Reconciliation, Jan.15.

This week in Religion we will continue to talk about The Forgiving Father (Ch.13), the Jesse Tree, Advent, and continue talking about God’s Forgiveness (ch.14). Persons of faith who have understanding of Catholic faith and doctrine

In Social Studies we will continue unit 3 (consumers/producers) as well as begin our Christmas Around the World unit. A paper will go home today asking your child to write how your family celebrates this holiday season. Please share your family traditions for this sacred holiday season and turn it in by Wednesday. We may have to change a few activities depending on the Christmas program practice schedule. Academically Prepared persons who learn about Social Studies.

In Math the children will use measurement to make Apple Jack Cookies, test addition facts, learn new addition facts for 13 and 14, count with pennies, nickels, and dimes, identifying lines of symmetry, and adding 2 digit numbers with dimes/pennies. Tomorrow we will need 7 apples, 7 eggs, 4 cups of shortening, box of baking soda, and 4 tsp salt to make cookies. We still have openings if you’d like to help! Academically Prepared persons who utilize math skills.

This week we will do spelling chapter 11; adding ed and ing to a word. The test will be on Friday.

Phonics we are working with blends and in Language we are continuing our chapter about nouns.

The book report for December will be a holiday/December theme. The children who returned their book form last month, checked out a new book today. If you have a book from home I need to see it by this Friday. The book report will be due Thurs. Dec. 18.

There are many reasons we will be studying Christmas Around the World. I feel the children should be aware of the fact that everywhere people celebrate the true meaning of Christmas. Also, we will practice one of the SLE’s Persons of Global Awareness who respect differences. This week we will start our “TRIP”, a unit on Christmas Around the World. Here are some of the ideas that I have, but I am open to other ideas, especially if you have a way to celebrate the season. Some thoughts are to have gingerbread cookies on St. Nicholas Day (we have to celebrate Mon. Dec. 8 because Dec. 6 is a Sat.), share some Mexican sweetbread/buenelos and hot chocolate on the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe (Dec. 12), and hot cross buns or cinnamon rolls and orange juice on St. Lucia Day (Dec. 13 but again we’ll go to Mon. Dec.15). If anyone would like to make/bake, help out, come share their culture with the class (with/without an activity or food). Just let me know. We will also do many activities to go along with these special days. We have a few videos to help us learn about these holidays. Responsible learners who try new things.

We will be working on a project at school and need 12-30 spare pictures of your family. They can be from holidays, summer, friends, family members can be with them, they can be by themselves or family members by themselves. You can send in different size pictures: wallets, 3x5, and 4x6. The main thing is you will NOT get them back so please don’t send your only copy if it’s your favorite. We would like them by Wednesday, Dec. 3 please!

On Friday (Dec. 5) the children will make their own paper stockings in honor of St. Nicholas (Holland). I would appreciate it if the students could bring in a SIMPLE gesture of Christmas for their 34 classmates. It could be a small homemade card, cookie, small candy cane, a pencil, or a simple note. I do want them to be SIMPLE. We have sooo many things to do to prepare for Christmas; I do not want to put any additional stress on you. Please have the child sign their name but do NOT put on it who it is from. (This will help s quickly pass out items!) These will be due no later than Thursday, Dec. 18. Thank you.
