Thirty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time - Year C
November 4, 2007
Read Sunday's Gospel, Luke 19:1-10

Gospel Summary
Children may know just how Zacchaeus felt in Sunday’s Gospel story. Have you ever lifted your children to your shoulders so they might see over the crowds at a parade, waiting in a long line, or at a local sporting event? Zacchaeus was short and climbed a tree to get a better look at Jesus. Something surely stirred in his heart because it seems that he may have already given some thought to changing. Jesus reached out to Zacchaeus in friendship, and Zacchaeus responded with generosity and true remorse.

Reflection for Families
Among our children's playmates we may find some who try our patience. It may be that they come from different backgrounds or circumstances than our own family, and we may hold similar reservations regarding their parents. Perhaps today's Gospel challenges us to encounter those who may be outcasts in a more loving way - as Jesus did.

Bringing the Gospel Into Your Family
Imagine that Jesus has joined your family (you may even want to set an extra place for him at the table). What kinds of things would you want to talk about with Jesus? Do you have some questions to ask him? Are there some things that you would be willing to change about yourself or your family in order to respond to Jesus as Zacchaeus did? In your discussion, think of some occupations in our own time that would be hard to have and still live the way Jesus wants us to.

Discussion Starters
1. I need to forgive . . .
2. Someone I know (of) repaid a debt like Zacchaeus when . . .
3. Someone I need to reach out to even though he/she is different from me is . . .

Non-Discrimination Policy – Enclosed please find our current Non-Discrimination Policy and related documents. These are to be incorporated into your 2007-2008 School Calendar/handbook.

Accelerated Reader – Of all the things parents can do to encourage school  success, nothing compares to developing a child’s love of reading. Keep lots of reading materials handy. Make it possible to read anytime, anywhere. Read with your child everyday. Be a reading role model. Children who see parents reading want to read, too. Your enthusiasm will motivate your child!

THANK YOU, THANK YOU…
… to the Room Parents for the lovely luncheon last week. The food was delicious, the decorations were very 50’s, and even classroom supervision was covered during lunch time. We felt truly appreciated!
…to the 7th grade parents and students.  The car wash was a huge success and how great it was to see you selling doughnuts on Sunday too. What a team!

Thanksgiving Feast
We need 14, twenty-pound turkeys for our Thanksgiving Feast. We will give 2 hours for each turkey (20 lbs. or more). We also need about 13 people who are willing to cook and carve the birds. You can earn three hours for each cooked and carved bird!

In addition, we need volunteers to cook and mash potatoes. We will get the potatoes and give them to the volunteers to prepare. Last, we need approximately 50 pies. Each pie and each pot of prepared mashed potatoes is worth 1 volunteer hour.

If any one is willing to help, please contact Teri McFadden, at (909) 542-0449 ext. 239. With your participation, this will truly be an HNM Family Thanksgiving Feast!
